Factors to consider with workplace lighting

Suitable Construction Lighting

Lighting is used for many different purposes: to ensure visual work can be done accurately, safely and in comfort, to increase timely production, and to enhance security and to promote the health and wellbeing of workers.

Following are the Factors to consider when providing workplace lighting:

  • Minimum light levels should be achieved, these are normally indicated by local code of practice or guidance.
  • Lighting must be arranged to avoid reflections and glare that might dazzle or temporarily disable workers.
  • Flickering should be avoided to prevent nuisance.
  • Lighting must be arranged to avoid the creation of shadows that might obscure areas and create risk.
  • Lighting must be suitable for the environment.
  • Emergency lighting should be provided to ensure safety in the event of mains supply failure.

What type of lights do I need?

LED Or Halogen

There are many different types of lighting technologies to choose from. Knowing the difference between halogen and LED can help you make an educated decision on what’s best for your application and budget.

    • LED lighting is extremely energy efficient. Most LED light bulbs use only a fraction as much light as a similar fluorescent or incandescent light bulb, making them far less of a drain on your building’s energy consumption.

On average, LED light bulbs are four to five times as efficient as incandescent lights and measurably more efficient than fluorescent lighting, based on their rating using the Lumen system.

LED lighting is also capable of producing a large amount of light at a lower wattage than conventional lighting. Widely available LED lights produce between 46 and 75 lumens per watt, versus 16.7 to 19.8 lumens per watt for incandescent lighting.

    • Halogens get to their full brightness the instant you flick the light switch. You don’t have to worry about waiting for them to warm up, like you do with some CFL energy-saving bulbs.

Halogens can be dimmed using a dimmer switch, just like an old incandescent – unlike some CFLs and LEDs. the CRI or Colour Rendering Index is a measure of how well a light source accurately reveals various colours.

Halogens are near perfect, getting CRI scores in the high 90s. LED and CFL bulbs can't match this, but are still above acceptable levels.

Shedding new light on lithium-ion batteries

Battery Power

Lithium batteries have become the go-to power source for just about every portable device from portable lights to laptops. Lithium batteries are chosen for a variety of reasons; let’s take a look at some of the pro’s most popular battery on the planet.

Energy Density of Lithium Batteries - Lithium batteries pack a lot of punch in a small package. That makes them ideal for things like mobile spot lights and search lights. Lithium batteries are capable of very high current, meaning they can provide the energy needed to make your spot light powerful enough to be a reliable tool. Lithium batteries can keep some portable lights running for 24 hours on a dimmable setting.
